The Position:
The position of Principal is viewed as a stepping stone within the firm for individuals who have the potential to achieve the most senior role within the firm, Managing Director (but have not as of yet demonstrated their ability to autonomously manage a book of business and generate significant annual revenue).
Principals are responsible for new client development and revenue generation as they build their own vertical practice. They also execute on searches in support of, and manage searches that are sold by, Managing Directors of the firm. The Principal position involves increasing responsibility for project and search execution leadership. The role allows the individual an opportunity to experience a wide variety of client interactions and search assignments, while at the same time beginning to contribute revenue and broaden the overall depth of the practice.
This position should be viewed as a developmental role within the firm, serving as a transition period between execution and sales. It should be understood that expectations about business development and revenue responsibilities will evolve with level of experience and will be adjusted for each individual based on ability and accomplishment.
Qualifications:
First and foremost, the Principal should have mastered the Candidate Development function. He/She should have a heightened level of ownership over his/her projects, and should have evidenced increasing responsibility for the management of his/her searches. He/She should have a track record of executing searches in a team-based model and must have an orientation toward working collaboratively with other staff members as a means of growing the practice and the firm as a whole. Additionally, he/she should have demonstrated evidence of business development capabilities in the form of leads and/or relationships that have led to search opportunities. Relevant and/or substantive experience within a particular vertical industry is preferred.
This individual must have well-refined communication skills, both in written and oral form. It is imperative that he/she possess an intense commitment to client results, and elevated client management skills. This person should be analytical and also embody an intuitive sense about people. Additionally, the role requires the ability to build relationships with potential clients, and the capability of marketing and selling to this community.
Researcher [+] More
The Position:
The Researcher's primary responsibilities include working on multiple small project teams conducting primary and secondary qualitative research across all industry specialties. This individual will assist in forming strategies, preparing research reports and conducting market research on industries and organizations. He/She is also responsible for assisting sales executives in their business development efforts and tracking industry specific news information. Additionally, the Researcher is responsible for maintaining database integrity and adhering to the research process.
The role requires extensive telephone networking, the use of library resources/periodicals and the Internet.
Qualifications:
The Researcher needs to have excellent time management skills in order to manage multiple projects across a variety of industries and functions. He/She must be able to follow processes in a disciplined manner while at the same time, must be able to think creatively and strategically. This person must be a team player and have great communication and organizational skills. He/She must also be detail-oriented, results focused and intellectually curious.
Associate [+] More
The Position:
The Associate's primary responsibility is the generation and development of potential candidates through direct phone calling and networking/sourcing. This individual is expected to continuously develop candidates throughout the process by maintaining strong candidate relationships. The Associate is expected to be an active participant in designing and continuing to refine the search strategy. He/She may also be responsible for production of the Candidate Report and completing References. Furthermore, the Associate must facilitate the coordination between all members of the search team: Account Manager, Researcher, Practice Administrator. This coordination will involve:
- Directing follow up research
- Overseeing the scheduling of candidates with a sense of urgency
- Promptly communicating candidate and client updates to the team
Additionally, the Associate is expected to proactively manage and develop junior staff.
Qualifications:
The Associate role requires maturity, a high degree of practical intelligence and creative thought process, strategic decision making ability, sound judgment and client management. He/She must have strong written and verbal communication skills and communicate in a thoughtful and direct way. The individual must also have demonstrated competency in the following areas:
- Comfort interfacing with high level executives
- Ability to quickly and accurately assess the professional competencies of top candidates
- Proven ability to understand the relationships between the various organizational components and players in sophisticated corporate organizations
- Attention to detail and organization
- High ethical standards
It is expected that this individual will also possess passion and enthusiasm for the business of executive search.
